Report: Bucs signing Rosen to practice squad

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are signing quarterback Josh Rosen to their practice squad, sources told Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Rosen went unclaimed on waivers Sunday following his release from the Miami Dolphins. He's joining his third team in as many years.

The Arizona Cardinals drafted Rosen with the 10th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, the Cardinals then selected Kyler Murray with the 2019 No. 1 overall pick and traded Rosen to the Dolphins for a second-rounder.

Rosen initially failed to win the starting job in Miami, with the team instead opting for Ryan Fitzpatrick. The ex-UCLA standout eventually appeared in six games, throwing just one touchdown to five interceptions and losing all three of his starts.

Miami used the fifth overall pick in this year's draft on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, once again pushing Rosen from a possible starting role.

He'll learn under Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. The future Hall of Famer's primary backups are Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin.

Gabbert appears secure as the No. 2 but Rosen could compete with Griffin for the No. 3 role.

Many teams are carrying more quarterbacks on the active roster than in past seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NFL also altered practice squad rules to provide more flexibility for teams.

Clubs can now have a maximum of 16 players on their practice squad, including up to six players with more than two accrued seasons. The NFL will also allow up to two players in a given week to be promoted to the active roster without the need for teams to give the players a standard contract.
