Belichick on using QB platoon: 'I would consider anything'

If using multiple quarterbacks throughout the 2020 season is the best option for the New England Patriots, head coach Bill Belichick will consider it.

"I always say I'll do what I think is best for the team, what gives us the best chance to win," Belichick said Wednesday when asked whether he'd contemplate using his quarterbacks in a platoon style this year.

"Whatever that is, I would certainly consider that, if it's run an unbalanced line or double-unbalanced line or 23 personnel or whatever it is. If it helps us win, then I would consider anything."

The Patriots have yet to announce who will step in for quarterback Tom Brady, who left the team after two decades and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.

New England signed Cam Newton this offseason, and the former league MVP has been splitting training-camp reps equally with second-year signal-caller Jarrett Stidham and journeyman veteran Brian Hoyer.

"Right now, we want to try to, like I said, give everybody an opportunity to get the basics," Belichick said. "Everybody's rotating through and we're trying to give everybody an opportunity to run the basic plays, get the basic fundamentals down. Yeah, of course at some point, we'll have to not equalize the reps ... but we're not there now."

Newton, the presumptive favorite to win the position battle after joining the team in early July, has battled injuries in the last two seasons and started just two games for the Carolina Panthers in 2019.

Hoyer, 34, appeared in four games (one start) for the Indianapolis Colts last year behind quarterback Jacoby Brissett, while Stidham attempted just four passes as a rookie coming out of the fourth round.
