Report: NFL conditionally reinstates Aldon Smith
Commissioner Roger Goodell has conditionally reinstated Dallas Cowboys pass-rusher Aldon Smith, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder.
Smith, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2015, is now cleared to take part in the Cowboys' virtual offseason program.
In April, Dallas signed the 30-year-old to a one-year deal worth $2 million in base salary and another $2 million in sack-based incentives.
Smith was a first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. He quickly established himself as one of the league's best young pass-rushers, racking up 42 sacks over his first three seasons, including 19.5 as a sophomore.
However, Smith's career was derailed by off-field issues, including four arrests for driving under the influence. He is reportedly now sober following his most recent arrest in June 2019.
Smith was released by the 49ers in August 2015 after he was arrested on hit-and-run, DUI, and vandalism charges. He played in nine games for the then-Oakland Raiders during the 2015 campaign before being indefinitely suspended.
The Cowboys are in need of help alongside DeMarcus Lawrence after losing Robert Quinn, their 2019 sack leader, in free agency.
