Bears commit to Trubisky as starting QB in 2020

The Chicago Bears will keep Mitchell Trubisky as their starting quarterback in 2020, general manager Ryan Pace said Tuesday, according to Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com.

Pace didn't commit to exercising the fifth-year option on Trubisky's rookie contract, saying it's too early in the offseason to address that looming decision. The Bears must make a call on the option by May 5.

Trubisky regressed in his third NFL campaign, throwing 17 touchdown passes against 10 interceptions while averaging a career-low 6.1 yards per pass attempt. His passer rating of 83.0 ranked 28th among 32 qualifying quarterbacks. Pace acknowledged the former No. 2 overall pick must play with greater consistency next season.

Trubisky's status in Chicago has been the subject of speculation for weeks. Frustrated Bears fans have implored the franchise to target a veteran starter to replace - or at least challenge - Trubisky in 2020.

Head coach Matt Nagy said "decision-making" will be his top priority for Trubisky this offseason, but added that he wants the 25-year-old "to be a master at understanding coverages."
