The New Orleans Saints and head coach Sean Payton agreed to a new five-year contract extension, Jay Glazer of FOXSports reports.

Payton was previously contracted through the 2020 season. His last deal was apparently worth $9 million per year, putting him among the top five highest-paid coaches in the league.

The 55-year-old led the Saints to back-to-back NFC South division titles over the past two years. Last year, the Saints had their third 13-3 season under Payton and made the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the Los Angeles Rams in controversial fashion.

Amid three straight 7-9 seasons from 2014-16, there was widespread speculation that Payton could leave New Orleans to take the Dallas Cowboys' head coaching job.

Payton was once an assistant in Dallas and owns a home in the city. With Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett in the midst of a contract year this season, rumors surfaced Payton could again be pursued by the NFC East team.

Payton led the Saints to their only Super Bowl win in franchise history in 2009 and owns a career record of 119-74.
