Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco announced Thursday that left tackle Russell Okung will not be ready for Week 1, according to ESPN's Eric Williams.
Okung is recovering from a pulmonary embolism he suffered in June because of blood clots. Telesco said the team will have a more concrete update on his status in a couple of weeks.
The team placed the veteran blocker on the non-football illness list in July. The 30-year-old missed all of training camp but said shortly after he still expects to play this season.
Okung's absence is a major blow to Los Angeles' offensive line. 2018 undrafted free agent Trent Scott is expected to man Philip Rivers' blindside in Okung's stead.
