Los Angeles Chargers star safety Derwin James will undergo foot surgery after suffering a stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal and is expected to miss about three months, sources told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

James, who is likely headed for injured reserve, could still potentially return later in the season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Should the 2018 first-team All-Pro sit for the entirety of his projected recovery timetable, a natural return date could be after the Chargers' bye in Week 12; L.A. plays the Denver Broncos on Dec. 1 following its break.

James, 23, made the Pro Bowl and finished second in Defensive Rookie of Year voting after a standout first season in the NFL. His injury is a huge blow to the Chargers, who enter the season among the favorites to win the AFC.
