Ezekiel Elliott's representatives told the Dallas Cowboys that he doesn't intend to play in 2019 without a new contract, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson.
The star running back informed Dallas he wouldn't suit up without a new deal in January.
It's unlikely that Elliott's holdout continues into the regular season, Anderson adds, based on the belief that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will prioritize finalizing a new contract prior to Week 1.
Jones previously expressed confidence that a deal with Elliott will be completed but also stated he doesn't believe there's a deadline for reaching an agreement.
The 24-year-old tailback reportedly wants to top Todd Gurley's position-leading annual salary of $14.38 million.
But the Cowboys don't seem willing to meet that demand, as COO Stephen Jones has said his team won't set the market in deals for Elliott, quarterback Dak Prescott, and receiver Amari Cooper.
Elliott is currently holding out of training camp in pursuit of a new contract. He's reportedly training in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
