The Atlanta Falcons placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, the team announced Monday.

Jarrett would make $12.38 million under the one-year tag in 2019, but the team plans to continue talks regarding a long-term extension prior to the July 15 deadline.

"As we have said since the end of the season, getting a deal done with Grady is our priority," general manager Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement. "Applying the franchise tag to him does not change that in any way. Our aim is for Grady to be an integral part of our plan for many years to come and this allows us to extend our negotiating window."

Jarrett was Atlanta's fifth-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft and has emerged as one of the league's top defensive tackles.

The interior rusher accumulated a career-high six sacks and three forced fumbles in 2018.
