Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is battling a career-threatening infection in his surgically-repaired right leg, sources told ESPN's Dianna Russini.

The infection is related to the surgery he underwent after breaking his fibula and tibia Nov. 18 against the Houston Texans. Smith has reportedly had several procedures and has had tissue removed from his leg in an attempt to clear the infection, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Smith is under contract with Washington through the 2022 campaign. The 34-year-old threw for 2,180 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in 10 games this year.

The Redskins are 0-2 without Smith, and lost to the Texans in the game he exited.
