The Washington Redskins are expected to sign Mark Sanchez as their backup quarterback, a source told ESPN's Field Yates.

Colt McCoy will reportedly remain Washington's starter after Alex Smith suffered a gruesome season-ending leg injury in Sunday's loss to the Houston Texans.

Sanchez spent the 2017 season with the Chicago Bears but didn't throw a pass. He was hit with a four-game suspension earlier this year for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The former first-round pick has ties to the Redskins' coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh was the New York Jets' quarterback coach between 2009 and 2012, while offensive line coach Bill Callahan was with the Jets in the same capacity between 2008 and 2011.

Sanchez hasn't started a game since November 2015.
