The Minnesota Vikings have claimed ex-Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah off waivers, the team announced on Wednesday.

Abdullah was cut Tuesday after falling behind Kerryon Johnson and LeGarrette Blount on the Lions' running back depth chart. The former second-round pick had 1,250 yards and six touchdowns in three seasons with Detroit prior to this year, but he's been active for just three games in 2018, running the ball once.

The 25-year-old will likely provide insurance behind Latavius Murray and Dalvin Cook, with the latter still working back to full health after a hamstring injury.
