New York Giants co-owner John Mara made it abundantly clear Tuesday that he's tired of controversy being attracted to his team by star receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

"I wish he would create the headlines by his play on the field as opposed to what he says and what he does off the field," Mara said at the NFL owners meetings, per Dan Graziano of ESPN. "I think he needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking."

Beckham thrust himself back into the spotlight earlier in September when he said he wasn't sure if quarterback Eli Manning was to blame for the Giants' struggles.

While he's been one of the most productive players since entering the league five years ago, Beckham has also ranked atop the NFL in emotional outbursts.

Beckham signed a five-year, $95-million extension with the Giants at the end of August. He sits ninth in the NFL in receiving with 506 yards, though he's only reached the end zone once.

"When you're 1-5, it generally means everybody has to play better," Mara responded when asked about Manning's rough season, according to Judy Battista of NFL Network.

The Giants' patriarch added that he doesn't regret drafting Saquon Barkley, a running back, second overall in the spring draft, instead of a quarterback.

"We went with the best player in the draft," he said. "I still believe he was the best player in the draft."
