The Miami Dolphins are taking it day by day with Ryan Tannehill.

The team's starting quarterback was surprisingly listed as inactive hours before Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears due to a right shoulder injury. Brock Osweiler played in his place and led the Dolphins to an overtime victory.

On Monday, head coach Adam Gase said the timeline of events caught the Dolphins off guard.

"(When the week started), he was sore but it got worse as the week went on. That's kind of why we found ourselves in a position that we weren't really thinking we were going to be in," Gase said.

Asked whether it could progress into a long-term absence, Gase couldn't provide any concrete answers.

"I'm not sure, I really don't know. I don't know the answer," he said. "It's day to day and it's really going to be about how he feels.

"I'll know more when I can see him throw again."

Despite the alarm brought by the inactive designation, Gase assured concerned parties that he's confident Tannehill will play again this season and that he'll regain his starting job when he's healthy enough to do so.
