Victor Cruz isn't ready to hang 'em up: 'I think I can still play'

Victor Cruz is 31 years old and didn't appear in an NFL game last season, but he's not quite ready to call it a career.

"I just love the game. I think I can still play," Cruz said Tuesday, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. "I don't want to exhaust all of that before I fall off."

Cruz garnered little interest on the free-agent market last year upon being released by the Chicago Bears at the end of the preseason. Not much has changed since the calendar flipped to 2018, yet Cruz continues to work out with the goal of stepping onto an NFL field again.

A former Pro Bowl wide receiver for the New York Giants, Cruz posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons from 2011-12 and had 998 yards in 14 games in 2013. A knee injury in 2014 derailed him, though.

Cruz acknowledged he may never get the chance he seeks to resurrect his career. With that in mind, he has an undisclosed date for when he'll retire unless a team comes calling for his services before then.

"Once that deadline comes, if nothing has happened I'll hang them up," he said. "Probably around training camp time and then we'll go from there."

Cruz participated in 15 contests in 2016 for the Giants, posting 586 yards receiving with one touchdown.
