Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross implored team officials to trade down in the first round rather than use the 11th overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft on defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, a league source told Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

According to the report, part of Ross' motivation to trade down was to save money. He was ultimately persuaded to approve the selection of Fitzpatrick at 11th overall. The Alabama product was expected to be a top-10 pick coming into the draft.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier acknowledged after the first round of the draft that his team discussed moving down with other clubs, though that is common practice throughout the NFL.
