The Miami Dolphins have signed free-agent quarterback Brock Osweiler, the team announced Friday. The contract is a one-year deal, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.

Osweiler will likely be a backup to Ryan Tannehill in Miami but could earn a shot to start if the Dolphins decide to hold an open quarterback competition in training camp.

The 27-year-old spent last season with the Denver Broncos, throwing for 1,088 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions while starting four contests.

Osweiler will be reunited with Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, who served as quarterbacks coach (2011-2012) and offensive coordinator (2013-2014) with the Broncos.
