Mitchell Trubisky has outplayed Mike Glennon in the preseason, with his first-team practice reps increasing as coaches recognize his quick progress. Now he has a shot at taking the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback job from his veteran teammate.
Glennon feels like he's heard this story before.
"Deja vu," said Glennon, according to Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune.
Glennon was supplanted by then-rookie Jameis Winston after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took him first overall in the 2015 draft.
Trubisky was expected to sit on the sidelines throughout his rookie season despite the king's ransom Chicago gave up to acquire him, and even opened training camp as the No. 3 quarterback behind Mark Sanchez.
But after completing 18-of-25 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown in Chicago's preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, Trubisky's forced his way into the conversation for starter, though his performance in the second preseason contest was less impressive.
Head coach John Fox said the depth chart hasn't changed, and Glennon is still No. 1.
"He's going to start preseason Game 3, which is a pretty good indicator where you start the season," Fox said. "I'll leave it at that."
Trubisky, however, will get his shot to play with the starters Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
"I think I've progressed faster than they expected I would," Trubisky said, "but I've still got a long ways to go, and I know that. But I think I've shown that I've earned these reps, and I just need to continue to get better each day."
