Bills trade Sammy Watkins to Rams

Cary Edmondson / USA TODAY Sports

Sammy Watkins' time in Buffalo has come to a shocking end.

Taking the entire NFL world by surprise on an already eventful Friday afternoon, the Bills announced that the club has traded Watkins and a sixth-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick.

In a corresponding move, immediately addressing the need created at wide receiver, Buffalo acquired Jordan Matthews and a third-round pick from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby.

Watkins, a high-upside playmaker who's been hampered by foot problems over the past two seasons, gets sent packing just months after the Bills elected to decline his fifth-year option and make the 2017 campaign his contract year.

The former first-round pick now heads out to the West Coast, where he'll reunite with former Bills teammate Robert Woods in providing second-year quarterback Jared Goff with a much-needed talent infusion at receiver.

Matthews should immediately emerge as a top target alongside Anquan Boldin and second-round rookie Zay Jones.
