Report: NFL to fine teams for overuse of game video on social media
Following a drop in ratings through four weeks, the NFL sent a memo to teams stating that they'll be subject to fines if they exceed the league's limits on video posted to social media before and during games, reports the MMQB's Albert Breer.
Starting Wednesday, Oct. 12 (the beginning of Week 6), teams will be largely limited to re-posting videos from the official NFL accounts on social media in the 60 minutes before games and during the action. There will be some leniency for videos posted to Snapchat.
The memo states that a first-time offense will cost up to $25,000, while a third offence could reach $100,000, along with the loss of rights to re-post official league content.
As it stands, official league videos must be watched where the league posts them. For example, if a team were to try to embed an NFL Twitter video onto their site, it would re-direct anyone who click on the video to the NFL's official Twitter page.
The NFL has denied that the penalties are related to drops in ratings.
