It's Geno time.
The New York Jets are planning to name Geno Smith the club's new starting quarterback in place of a struggling Ryan Fitzpatrick, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
After a contract standoff that lasted throughout the offseason, Fitzpatrick has been unable to recapture the level of production that saw him put together a career-best showing in 2016.
The veteran completed just 57 percent of his passes for 1,441 yards, five touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while the Jets posted a disappointing 1-5 record over the first six games of the year. Highlighting that frustrating start was an unfathomable nine interceptions over a two-game stretch.
Getting bumped to the top of the depth chart will see Smith make his first start since the 2014 season. The former second-round pick had seemingly been in position to earn the lead job over Fitzpatrick last year before a training-camp altercation left him with a broken jaw.

The Jets will hope that taking the reins of Chan Gailey's quarterback-friendly system can help Smith to an improvement similar to that of Fitzpatrick last season. Any turnover issues similar to that of his previous starting stint could have the coaching staff looking to the future, though, giving Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg some reps under center.
