Brees says all parties agree extension should be coming

With his hefty contract expiring after next season, Drew Brees is confident this won't be his last season with the New Orleans Saints.

Brees is set to have a cap hit of $30 million this season, if he doesn't restructure his contract ahead of time. The 37-year-old quarterback has never wavered from his stance that an extension is coming, but as the offseason carries on, he's been left waiting on a new deal.

While he may be getting frustrated waiting for word from general manager Mickey Loomis, Brees doesn't see anyone fighting a potential extension.

"Do I want to sign an extension? Yes, I do," Brees told Michael Stern of USA TODAY Sports. "Do the Saints feel that way? Yes. Do the fans feel that way? Yes. So we all agree on that."

The Saints slim chances at a championship rest primarily on the shoulders of Brees, who has led the NFL in passing yards for four of the last five seasons. This offseason, the team drafted wide receiver Michael Thomas in the second round and signed tight end Coby Fleener to help improve Brees' options.

The Saints currently have under $2 million in cap space with Brees set to take up a large chunk of that money this season. As training camp opens July 27, Loomis and the Saints have a limited amount of time to deal with their quarterback's contract situation before the season gets underway.
