After watching all potential trade destinations disappear, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick reportedly resumed throwing "a bit" Tuesday, but he may have to do more than "a bit" to be the starter.

Blaine Gabbert filled in adequately considering the situation he walked into last season, leading his team to 3-5 record in their final eight games. It was one more win than Kaepernick could muster in his eight starts.

Gabbert has embraced his role as the team's starter through the offseason and he's beginning to impress his teammates.

"(Gabbert)’s definitely taking control," 49ers tight end Garrett Celek told Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. "Whoever’s at quarterback needs to take control and be our leader out there. And he’s definitely doing that. He’s making good decisions on the field.

"I think he’s definitely developing more and more as the days go on. But, right now, we’re all in the same boat learning this offense."

Gabbert is getting a leg up on Kaepernick as the 49ers install new coach Chip Kelly's rebellious offense. The 26-year-old hasn't shied away from commanding the offense and being a complete team leader while Kaepernick recovers from shoulder surgery.

"Whether it’s in the locker room or out on the field, everyone has a good relationship with him. And him motivating us is good," said Celek.

Kaepernick is expected to compete for the starting job once he's cleared to play, but if Gabbert continues at this pace, his teammates may anoint him as the number one guy before Kaepernick gets his shot.

"He carries himself very well in the locker room," said guard Zane Beadles, who played two season with Peyton Manning. "He seems like a true professional. He’s always in there studying and he knows what we’re trying to accomplish and what he needs to do at the quarterback position. I’ve seen all good things from him."
