As former assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson over two spells at Manchester United, Carlos Queiroz was part of some trophy-laden years at Old Trafford.

Three league titles, a League Cup, and a Champions League medal were accumulated during the Ferguson and Queiroz partnership, and the careers of Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, and Cristiano Ronaldo took off under their tutelage.

The former right-hand man, who is currently head coach of Iran after stints managing Portugal and Real Madrid, though, does not seem overly impressed with the current crop of Red Devils.

He feels the changeover following the departure of his old boss at United has not been smooth.

"I have great admiration and respect for Louis (van Gaal) and David (Moyes). They are great coaches that I admire but I think they made some critical and crucial mistakes in the transition from Alex," he told the Guardian.

He believes the mass changes in the backroom staff by Moyes was not wise, and that there needs to be more leadership at the club.

He also bemoans the lack of big names in Stretford. He says there is no development of talent at the club now.

"Great players like (George) Best, (Paul) Scholes, (Ryan Giggs) Giggsy, (Roy) Keane, (Ruud) Van Nistelrooy - where are they? Where are the stars of Manchester United?"

It was always about creating players. Now it is the opposite, we see some of the best players going down and even some of the players that arrived in the team like (Radamel) Falcao and (Angel) Di Maria were on the bench. I saw Di Maria and some games, he looked like he has never played football. There is panic buying.

Queiroz still dreams of returning to England, saying "I did not complete my job over there," but for now his focus lies with getting Iran to the 2018 World Cup after the side was eliminated from the group stages in Brazil last year.
