Oilers' Campbell: I've been 'pathetic' this season

"Soup" is ice cold to start the season.

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell wasn't taking it easy on himself after allowing six goals on 36 shots in a loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday.

"I just haven't brought my best," Campbell said postgame. "Frankly, it's just been pathetic the way I've been playing. I owe it to this team to bring my A-game, and they haven't seen it yet."

The Oilers were outplayed in the 6-2 defeat, as Dallas generated 4.35 expected goals compared to Edmonton's 3.35, per Natural Stat Trick, but there were at least a couple goals that Campbell would like to have back. Among them was a long-range slapper from Colin Miller that squeaked in past Campbell's glove.

"Through it, over it, under it, I don't know how it went in but it went in and it's not good enough," Campbell said.

Campbell now owns an .874 save percentage and a 4.20 goals-against average through eight games this season, his first with the Oilers after signing a five-year, $25-million contract as a free agent this past summer.

The 30-year-old is trying to remain positive through the turbulent start.

"I'm just going to keep working hard and I'm going to get through this and be there for the guys," he said.

Fortunately for the Oilers, 24-year-old rookie Stuart Skinner has picked up the slack, posting a sparkling .944 save percentage and 2.10 goals-against average in five appearances.
