Arians upset after loss to Washington: 'We're a very dumb football team'
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians can't stand the way his team has been performing after it suffered a second straight loss in Week 10 against the Washington Football Team.
The reigning champions, who committed 11 penalties versus the New Orleans Saints in Week 8, again shot themselves in the foot with costly flags Sunday.
"It has nothing to do with ability. It's about execution and being a smart football team. We're a very dumb football team. And that's a reflection on the coaches," Arians said after the 29-19 defeat, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.
Tampa Bay had a rough start versus Washington, with tight end O.J. Howard jumping offside on the first scrimmage play of the game. The Bucs then had two neutral-zone infraction penalties on third downs late in the second quarter, helping Washington extend its drive and eventually kick a field goal.
Coming off a bye, the Buccaneers finished with six total penalties.
"Energy and passion are very fixable," Arians added. "The penalties - they've gotta get corrected sooner or later. The first play of the game - they're shifting and we jump offsides. They don't even run a play and we jump offsides. The stupidity has to go away if we're gonna go anywhere."
The Bucs, who entered the game as the NFL's No. 1 passing team, also struggled to move the ball in the air against Washington. Quarterback Tom Brady finished with 220 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Additionally, Tampa Bay saw its receivers drop three passes, giving the team 15 total drops this year.
"It's very disappointing," Arians said. "It's very alarming to watch the energy at every practice and show up with a lack of execution and energy that it takes to win on Sunday. We've got a lot of soul-searching to do."
Brady and Co. recorded only 273 total yards and 14 first downs Sunday, both season lows. The 6-3 Bucs will try to snap their skid in Week 11 against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
