Newton still wants to play football, says he's now vaccinated

Free-agent quarterback Cam Newton released a video Sunday saying he's now vaccinated against COVID-19 and wants to resume his NFL career.

"Hell yeah, I want to still play football," the former NFL MVP said. "I still get that urge to go out and perform and do something that I've been doing since I was 7 years old ... I'm so much more than a football player, respect me as such."

The New England Patriots surprisingly released Newton and named rookie passer Mac Jones their starting quarterback prior to the regular season.

Newton declined to comment on his vaccination status in August, leading to speculation that it played a factor in his release.

However, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick later said the signal-caller's vaccination status didn't affect the team's decision to move on.

A few teams have been linked to Newton since he was cut. The Dallas Cowboys reportedly explored signing him upon his release.

"You're probably asking yourself, 'Don't nobody want Cam?' That's a lie. I've been getting offers, but the realization of it is, it has to be right," Newton said.

The 32-year-old is years removed from his prime. Newton posted a 7-8 record with the Patriots in 2020 and tossed eight touchdowns to 10 interceptions, good for an 82.9 passer rating.

Newton, the 2011 first overall pick, is a three-time Pro Bowler, but his last selection came in 2015.

Unvaccinated players are facing strict COVID-19 protocols this season. Vaccinated free agents who sign with new teams aren't required to wait five days to enter the clubhouse.
