Southgate names provisional 33-man England squad for Euros
Gareth Southgate named a bloated 33-man England squad for the upcoming European Championship on Tuesday as he tries to identify the players who will be fit for the summer tournament.
Seven players will be cut next Tuesday so Southgate can submit his final 26-man Euro squad.
Liverpool right-back Trent-Alexander Arnold is included in the provisional roster after being omitted from the last squad in March, and is joined by an uncapped quartet of Ben Godfrey, Sam Johnstone, Aaron Ramsdale, and Ben White.
Eric Dier, James Maddison, and Nick Pope are among the notable absentees.
Kalvin Phillips was called up despite suffering a shoulder injury in the final minutes of Leeds United's season-ending win over West Bromwich Albion.
"My preference is to name the squad as a clean 26. We were able to do that ahead of Russia (World Cup in 2018)," Southgate said. "We had stand-by players that knew their role. That's always a preferable situation, but we've not got an ideal pack of cards this time and there are a lot of unknowns."
Twelve of Southgate's players are set to feature in this week's Europa League and Champions League finals.
The European Championship opens with Italy facing Turkey on June 11. England's first match is against Croatia two days later.
