The allure of spending more time with family was one of the reasons now-retired quarterback Alex Smith decided to call it a career.
Smith explained on "The Dan Patrick Show" that he was on a ski and snowboard trip with his children and parents when he first had an epiphany about retirement. Smith grew up skiing but didn't get the chance to ski with his kids until recently.
"There was a moment where we paused on the side of the mountain and my two boys were next to me, and my dad was there as well, and it definitely hit me, 'I want more of that,'" Smith recalled. "I want to chase more of that.
"I've been putting that off for a long, long time, and I can go do that now. And the reason I can go do it is partly because I pursued football, you know? That I knew if I pushed football as hard as I could, all the other things in life, I wouldn't have any limitations. I'm excited to go knock down some more walls that I've built up."
The 36-year-old spent 16 seasons in the NFL, including stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Washington Football Team.
