Broncos-Patriots now part of MNF doubleheader due to virus concerns
The Denver Broncos and New England Patriots will meet Monday at 5 p.m. ET instead of Sunday afternoon for their Week 5 battle due to coronavirus concerns connected to the latter, the league announced on Thursday.
Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore and practice squad defensive tackle Bill Murray tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days, while quarterback Cam Newton produced a positive test six days ago.
New England recorded no positive tests Thursday, leaving the NFL optimistic that the Patriots could field a healthy roster and get ready to play by Monday.
The game will air on ESPN and precede the originally scheduled Monday Night Football matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints.
The Patriots canceled practice Wednesday following Gilmore's positive test and worked virtually Thursday while their facilities were shut down. They'll work virtually again Friday and hope to finally get back in the building and practice Saturday, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB.
Teams typically limit their on-field preparations to a walkthrough on the day before a game, meaning New England could face Denver with only one full true practice under its belt.
New England had its Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs pushed back from Sunday to Monday for similar reasons. The club has a bye in Week 6.
