Report: Celtics, Pelicans 'extensively' discussed Tatum in AD talks

The Boston Celtics and New Orleans Pelicans have "extensively discussed" Jayson Tatum as the potential centerpiece of an Anthony Davis trade in the coming offseason, which could take place if the All-Star center isn't dealt by the Pelicans before Thursday's deadline, sources told The Athletic's Sam Amick.

The Pelicans have sought guarantees from the Celtics about specific trade packages, but Boston has been reluctant to make promises, sources told the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach. Still, he reports the Celtics have made it clear they're willing to offer an "explosive package" and that no specific player will be off limits in negotiations.

Kyrie Irving is currently a roadblock preventing the Celtics from dealing for Davis, as their contracts can't be on the same roster due to CBA rules. However, Irving will likely become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, clearing the way for a deal.

Meanwhile, the Celtics have reportedly urged the Pelicans to avoid trading Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers - one of his preferred destinations - and to instead wait until the offseason when Boston can officially send an offer.

The Lakers have reportedly offered their entire young core, multiple draft picks, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's expiring contract in exchange for Davis and Solomon Hill's contract. However, negotiations reportedly stalled, at least for now, due to the Pelicans' asking price.
