Report: United board backs Mourinho amid claims of inevitable sacking

Suggestions that Jose Mourinho's tenure at Manchester United is coming to an end might be premature.

The Guardian's Jamie Jackson reports United's board dismissed a Friday report from The Mirror's David McDonnell that signaled the looming end of Mourinho's United reign, with the executives continuing to throw their support behind the Red Devils' Portuguese manager.

According to Sky Sports, United called the report of Mourinho's impending dismissal "nonsense."

McDonnell, citing a senior source at the club, reported Mourinho was set to be sacked this weekend regardless of how Saturday's match against Newcastle ended. Despite United reportedly refuting his story, McDonnell appeared on BT Sport on Saturday and adamantly stood by his reporting, adding that he doesn't "put any store" in what the club says.

While Mourinho's job appears to be safe for now, the club's hierarchy is still said to be seeking answers from the 55-year-old tactician regarding his side's dismal start to the campaign - United's worst ever start to a Premier League season.

According to The Independent's Miguel Delaney, Mourinho will meet with the club's board of directors in the coming week, with some executives believing the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss is approaching "the point of no return" at United.
