Frank Lampard has turfed Jose Mourinho, his former boss at Chelsea, out of the League Cup.

Second-tier Derby County are unexpectedly through to the fourth round after defeating Manchester United on penalties at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Every spot-kick was converted before Phil Jones failed with the 16th attempt of the shootout.

The Rams were nearing a surprise route past United in normal time when second-half goals from Harry Wilson and Jack Marriott scratched out Juan Mata's opener early in the first half. Wilson's goal was a beautifully struck free-kick, and the youngster on loan from Liverpool seemed to revel celebrating in Stretford.

Marriott scored after United were reduced to 10 men midway through the second period when goalkeeper Sergio Romero handled outside the area, but Marouane Fellaini restored parity when he rose to nod a dramatic equalizer past Scott Carson on 95 minutes and send the match to penalties.

Lee Grant, Romero's replacement and a former Derby shot-stopper, and his opposite number Carson were helpless for the majority of a penalty shootout high in quality. That was until Jones, often the subject of mockery from opposing fans, hit a soft effort that was easily collected by Carson down to his left.

The shock result piles more pressure on Mourinho. Reports surfaced before the match claiming Mourinho informed Paul Pogba and the rest of the squad that the Frenchman would no longer wear the captain's armband for the club. Pogba wasn't in the matchday squad to face Derby.

"I know we are a good team, we wanted to come here and go toe to toe with United," Wilson told BBC Sport postmatch, before reflecting on his sublime goal. "The free-kick was too far out to curl it so I put my laces through it and tried to get movement on the ball."

Manchester United will look to tend to their wounds with victory at West Ham United on Saturday. Derby, meanwhile, travel to Bolton Wanderers.
