Sam Darnold is about to make history.

After Teddy Bridgewater was reportedly traded to the New Orleans Saints, the New York Jets are expected to name Darnold their Week 1 starting quarterback, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft will become the youngest starting quarterback in NFL history at 21 years and 97 days old when he takes the field against the Detroit Lions, per the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta.

Darnold has looked developed beyond his years during the preseason, tossing two touchdowns to one interception and 244 yards over three games. He also completed over 70 percent of his passes in two of the three games.

With Bridgewater now headed to New Orleans, veteran Josh McCown will act as Darnold's backup.
