Report: Cowboys' Garrett trying to convince Witten to play 2018 season

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

It's hard to imagine the modern Dallas Cowboys without tight end Jason Witten, and head coach Jason Garrett is doing his best to make sure it stays that way.

Witten is actively contemplating retirement and is considering joining the Monday Night Football broadcast team, but Garrett is attempting to persuade the 11-time Pro Bowler to suit up for the 2018 season, a team source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters Friday that Witten hadn't made a final decision on retirement.

Witten's production has waned over the last five seasons but he's still a decent pass-catcher, recording 63 receptions for 560 yards and five touchdowns in 2017. The 35-year-old hasn't missed a game since 2004.
