The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing linebacker Tamba Hali after 12 seasons with the team, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing a source.

Hali confirmed the news with a Twitter post.

Hali only managed five games in 2017 due to knee issues. Before last season, he'd been a consistent, reliable performer for much of his career. He was named to five Pro Bowls and his 89.5 career sacks rank second in team history, behind only Derrick Thomas' 126.5.

The move continues the Chiefs' offseason purge of veteran talent. The team agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins and corner Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams, released safety Ron Parker on Monday, and is expected to let linebacker Derrick Johnson hit free agency.
