Petr late than never: Cech finally notches 200th EPL clean sheet in win
Good things come to those who wait.
Just ask Arsenal shot-stopper Petr Cech, who on Sunday against Watford finally registered his 200th Premier League clean sheet, extending the English top-flight record he set in December 2015.
And it was a fitting route for Cech, who stopped his first penalty with Arsenal, denying Hornets forward Troy Deeney in the 62nd minute to end a stretch of 15 consecutive converted penalties. It was Cech's first penalty save since February 2011 when he was with Chelsea.
Rank | Player | Clean Sheets | Appearances |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Petr Cech | 200 | 432 |
2 | David James | 169 | 572 |
3 | Mark Schwarzer | 151 | 514 |
4 | David Seaman | 140 | 344 |
5 | Nigel Martyn | 137 | 372 |
6 | Pepe Reina | 134 | 285 |
T7 | Edwin van der Sar | 132 | 313 |
T7 | Tim Howard | 132 | 399 |
T7 | Brad Friedel | 132 | 450 |
10 | Peter Schmeichel | 128 | 310 |
It was the first spotless display since the towering Czech denied Newcastle United on Dec. 16 at the Emirates, kickstarting a stretch of 11 matches during which Cech conceded on 21 goals.
Shkodran Mustafi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all scored as Arsenal dominated proceedings days after a crucial 2-0 Europa League win at AC Milan. With the 3-0 victory, Arsenal avoids losing a fourth consecutive league match for the first time in Arsene Wenger's two-decades-plus tenure with the club.
