Jose Mourinho has the complete support of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at Manchester United, and would even be backed if he fell out with his most expensive purchase, according to The Independent's Miguel Delaney.

The manager's handling of Paul Pogba was nudged under the spotlight when the French midfielder was benched for consecutive matches against Huddersfield Town and Sevilla in February. During that time, Mourinho also publicly criticised the player he spent around €105 million on in the summer of 2016, and is yet to rediscover the consistency Pogba showed at his previous club Juventus.

Despite Mourinho ultimately being behind the expensive bid to re-sign Pogba, Woodward has complete trust in the United boss' man management of the 24-year-old and would be willing to sell Pogba if there was any future flashpoint with Mourinho. Sources close to the alleged fallout have told Delaney that situation is "still someway up in the air."

The manager's control isn't restricted to the Pogba stance. Mourinho, who recently signed a contract until 2020 at Old Trafford, has been entrusted with full control over his squad, and if his instructions are not followed any player who falls foul of his expectations can leave.

The benchmark of what attitude Mourinho expects from his players is believed to be Nemanja Matic, the midfield metronome signed from Chelsea for a reported £40 million last summer. The former Inter and Real Madrid overseer would prefer to see more acquisitions possessing the Serbian's professional mindset this upcoming summer.
