After months of wondering where Carlos Gonzalez will play in 2018, he may wind up back in the same purple-tinged uniform he's donned the past nine seasons.
The Colorado Rockies have reportedly stayed in contact with their longtime outfielder, and a reunion remains a possibility, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.
Gonzalez has been in talks with other suitors but no deal has materialized. Agent Scott Boras said on Wednesday that his clients, which includes Gonzalez, were "closer to deals than we were two weeks ago."
Were he to return to the Rockies, the team would have a pretty crowded outfield depth chart. Charlie Blackmon is a mainstay in center field, while Ian Desmond, Raimel Tapia, and David Dahl could all see time at the corner positions. Gerardo Parra is recovering from hand surgery but should be available early in the season.
While much has been publicized about Gonzalez's disappointing 2017, it can mostly be traced to his abysmal first half. The power never truly materialized as it had in past years, but he still hit .314/.390/.531 with eight home runs and 21 doubles in 62 second-half games last season.
