The Seattle Seahawks appear to have taken the first steps in avoiding a split with Earl Thomas, as general manager John Schneider said he spoke with Thomas' agents regarding a new contract, according to Gregg Bell of The News Tribune.
The safety hinted that he wanted an extension in January, and suggested the Seahawks start talking money if they wanted to retain him. Thomas is owed $8.5 million in base salary for the upcoming season before becoming a free agent.
Since being drafted 14th overall in 2010, Thomas has 642 tackles, 63 pass deflections, and 25 interceptions which led to six Pro Bowls selections over his eight-year career.
