They still appear to be trying, but it could be awhile before the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals find common ground in trade talks for catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network on Monday that while the Nationals have remained in touch with the Marlins regarding a possible trade for Realmuto - the NL East rivals were previously said to be "heavily engaged" with each other - they haven't made any progress toward completing a deal.

A major sticking point appears to be Miami's high asking price for the 26-year-old catcher, who has another two years of team control remaining after the 2018 season. Miami has reportedly demanded Washington include either of its top two outfield prospects in Victor Robles and Juan Soto, according to Morosi, but the Nationals have refused to part with either player.

While the Nats' apparent reluctance to include Robles - ranked as the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline - in a package for Realmuto was previously known, their reported preference to keep Soto is new.

Though both are highly regarded prospects, Robles is further ahead in his development. He made a September cameo in the majors last year and could make more of an impact this season. Soto, on the other hand, remains more of a work in progress. While the 19-year-old put up good numbers across the board in 2017, injuries limited him to just 32 games, and he's yet to advance beyond Single-A.

Realmuto will earn $2.9 million this season after losing to the Marlins in arbitration. Following the hearing, his agent publicly confirmed his client would like the Marlins to trade him.

Including the Nationals, at least 12 teams have reportedly inquired with the Marlins about Realmuto.
