Mustachioed midfield metronome Roque Mesa's mercurial first season in south Wales has taken its latest twist.

Swansea City announced Tuesday that Mesa is returning to the Spanish top flight, joining Sevilla on loan until the end of the season.

The club statement explained the decision to ship Mesa back to Spain, saying, "With a number of options available in Carlos Carvalhal’s midfield, the Swans have agreed to let the 28-year-old link up with a Sevilla side which faces Manchester United in the Champions League next month."

Mesa joined Swansea in the summer from Las Palmas on a four-year deal for a reported £11-million fee, and after guiding the Canary Islands lot to La Liga safety, it was expected that the midfielder could help fill the void left by a number of Liberty Stadium departures.

Instead, Mesa appeared in 11 Premier League matches, playing the full 90 on just four occasions without registering a goal or an assist. Skilled in possession and able to play in either a withdrawn or advanced central midfield role, Mesa joins the Andalusians ahead of Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg clash with giant killer Leganes.
