Report: Swansea enlists help of Jorge Mendes in January window

Carlos Carvalhal's swift rebuild mission at Swansea City will be assisted by Jorge Mendes, the Portuguese super-agent who boasts Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa among his vast number of clients.

Although getting players of that repute to the Liberty Stadium would be near-impossible, The Telegraph's John Percy understands Mendes has already flicked through his portfolio and recommended cast-off Atletico Madrid duo Kevin Gameiro and Nicolas Gaitan.

Gameiro, a €32-million nab from Sevilla before the 2016-17 season, has fallen further down the pecking order since the arrival of Costa, and has seldom rehashed his bustling best in the Spanish capital. His signing is deemed unlikely, but it is hoped that midfielder Gaitan can be persuaded to move after just one La Liga start this season and not featuring for Argentina since October 2016.

They aren't the only players Mendes is suggesting to compatriot Carvalhal, and the Swansea board is reportedly happy with his involvement. His connections have transformed the fortunes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club which currently occupies top spot in the Championship and boasts a wealth of Mendes clients.

Away from Mendes' Gestifute firm, the priority is to return Andre Ayew to Swansea. The Ghanaian enjoyed a fruitful maiden term in the Premier League with the Swans, encouraging West Ham United to part with £20.5 million for his services in the summer of 2016. However, injuries and competition at the Irons have reduced him to a increasingly peripheral role. Swansea hopes to encourage him to switch back, and potentially score the goals required to ensure an eighth consecutive season in the Premier League.

Former Sheffield Wednesday overseer Carvalhal is believed to have been entrusted with £30 million to address Swansea's bottom-placed standing this month, but he's admitted it's a period that can prove "a nightmare" when looking to complete deals.

Liverpool struts into Swansea on Monday following last weekend's statement 4-3 victory over Manchester City.
