Klopp: Karius now Liverpool's No. 1

Jurgen Klopp has temporarily sorted Liverpool's goalkeeping pecking order, naming Loris Karius the club's first-choice shot-stopper.

Long a point of contention for a side that offers loads in attack whilst flirting with intermittent disaster in goal, Belgium international Simon Mignolet started the season as Liverpool's No. 1 following an erratic debut campaign by his German counterpart Karius.

Now, Klopp says the job belongs to his countryman, but warns it could be a provisional gig. "He's the No. 1 now," Klopp told reporters, courtesy of BBC Sport. "Loris needs to deliver and he knows that."

Karius, 24, has started all six of Liverpool's Champions League outings but on just four occasions in the league, including the 4-3 victory over previously unbeaten Manchester City at a raucous Anfield. Despite the result, Karius came under fire for Leroy Sane's near-post first-half equaliser.

"It is a difficult job being a goalkeeper or centre-half at Liverpool because no-one forgives you one mistake," the gaffer added.

"I am fine with our goalkeeper situation. Yes, Loris could have made a save for the first goal against Man City even though I thought it was a world-class finish."

Fortunately for Liverpool's new No. 1, the next fixture on the schedule should be a relief compared to the barrage of efforts he saw from table-topper City as Karius and Co. travel to south Wales to face last-placed Swansea City on Monday.
