The Chicago Bears have hired Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new head coach, the team announced Monday.
Nagy spent five seasons in Kansas City, taking over as offensive coordinator in 2017.
Head coach Andy Reid called plays for the first 11 games of the season, but handed the duties to Nagy in an attempt to end the Chiefs' offensive woes.
The change worked. K.C. rattled off four wins over the final five games of the season to win the AFC West, with the offense averaging just over 28 points per game with Nagy in charge.
Nagy intends to call his own plays in Chicago, sources told Chris Mortensen of ESPN.
However, the Chiefs were bounced from the playoffs in the wild-card round Saturday, and significant blame was placed on Nagy's shoulders for failing to give Kareem Hunt enough second-half carries while K.C. held the lead.
The Bears made it clear they intended to hire an offensive-minded head coach to develop No. 2 overall pick Mitch Trubisky, possibly motivated by the success of Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams and Jared Goff.
