Goodell: NFL still dominating TV market despite declining ratings
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he isn't worrying about another drop in television ratings for the league.
Despite ratings reportedly falling 9.7 percent in 2017 after an 8 percent drop in 2016, Goodell said the league still accounted for a majority of the highest-rated shows on television over the past year.
"We always want ratings to go up, but we're 37 of the top 50 shows, which is higher than ever," Goodell said before the Jacksonville Jaguars' home playoff win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN. "We're likely to be the No. 1 show on FOX - excuse me on all of television, the FOX Sunday afternoon game. Sunday night, prime time is for the seventh year in a row the No. 1 show. Thursday Night Football is No. 2.
"I think dominance of the NFL in television is still very clear."
The commissioner also mentioned that the NFL will continue to explore online options with Verizon and Amazon, which streamed 10 Thursday Night Football games in 2017.
