Bruce Arians announces retirement

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians announced his retirement Monday.

Arians was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2014.

"I probably didn't know until that kick went through. Everybody speculated for months. Everybody had a story. You now have the story," Arians told reporters.

Many believed Arians would retire at the end of the season but he said that he hadn't made a decision as recently as December 26.

The Cardinals compiled a 49-30-1 record during Arians' five seasons with the team.

It was speculated that concerns about Arians' health influenced his decision to retire, but the 65-year-old was candid about his choice to retire Monday.

“There are so many reasons for the decision, but family is the one.”

The Cardinals reportedly requested an interview with Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur for their head coaching vacancy.
