Report: Angels have had discussions with Moustakas

The Los Angeles Angels have already made one of the winter's biggest splashes by signing Shohei Ohtani, and they may not be done shopping just yet.

Los Angeles has reportedly had discussions with free-agent third baseman Mike Moustakas, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Fletcher added that nothing "is hot" between the two sides at the moment.

Third base remains an issue for the Angels after they received limited production from the combination of Yunel Escobar and Luis Valbuena last season. While Escobar did provide average production during his injury-shortened season, Valbuena - currently the Angels' projected starter at third in 2018 - slashed a paltry .199/.294/.432, and though he did hit 22 home runs, a .423 OPS against left-handed pitchers rendered Valbuena virtually unplayable versus southpaws.

Moustakas would give Angels manager Mike Scioscia another proven power-hitting option from the left side to slot into the middle of the order alongside Mike Trout. The 29-year-old mashed 38 homers for the Kansas City Royals in 2017, five more than any member of the Angels last year.

Signing Moustakas, a native of Los Angeles, would cost the Angels draft-pick compensation after he rejected a $17.4-million qualifying offer from the Royals in November.

Moustakas, who missed most of the 2016 season due to a torn ACL, had a successful return to action this past year, being named an All-Star for the second time in his career and winning the AL Comeback Player of the Year award.
