Giants fire McAdoo, Reese in midst of disastrous 2-10 season

The New York Giants fired head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese just hours after a 24-17 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday sent the team to 2-10.

The moves come less than a week after quarterback Eli Manning was asked to give way to backups Geno Smith and Davis Webb. Manning chose instead to end his 210-game starting streak to allow Smith to be under center from the opening snap of Sunday's game.

The Manning saga has led to substantial fan response and even a report that a group of 25 former Giants planned to stand on the sidelines during the team's next game in Manning jerseys.

McAdoo, the first head coach in the league to be fired this season, disciplined other star players during the season. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was suspended for one game in October over a spat with coaches and top corner Janoris Jenkins was also benched for one game in early November for violating team rules.

The Giants entered the season with lofty goals after posting an 11-5 record in McAdoo's first year at the helm. New York got off to a disastrous 0-5 start and could not recover.

Star receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall were both lost for the season after Week 5.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season and assistant general manager Kevin Abrams will fill the interim GM role.
