Running back Darren McFadden announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday in a statement released on Twitter.

The 10-year veteran was released Sunday by the Dallas Cowboys, with the team saying it was a mutual decision.

"I just want to say that I make this decision not with sadness or without further opportunity, but with a couple of days to reflect on how I feel and where I am at this stage of life. I know that this is the right move for me. I look forward to what the future holds - spending some more time with my family, pursuing some outside interests and, of course, going to a few Arkansas football games," McFadden wrote.

The Oakland Raiders drafted McFadden out of Arkansas fourth overall in 2008. He played his first seven seasons with the Raiders, joining the Cowboys in 2015 and spending three seasons with the team.

McFadden played just one game this season, carrying the ball once for a loss of 2 yards.

He had two 1,000-plus yard seasons in his career, totaling 1,157 rushing yards on 223 carries over 13 games with the Raiders in 2010, and 1,089 yards on 239 carries over 16 games with the Cowboys in 2015.

He finishes his career with 5,421 rushing yards, 2,114 receiving yards, and 33 total touchdowns over 103 games.
